What is Softshell fabric?

Softshell is a multilayer fabric that usually consists of two or three layers bonded together. These layers provide protection from various weather conditions and comfort when worn.

The structure of Softshell fabric may include:

• Middle layer – in some Softshell fabrics, this is a membrane that provides extra protection against wind and moisture.
• Inner layer – soft jersey or fleece that provides comfort and helps retain warmth.

How do you sew Softshell fabric?

I wouldn't call myself an expert, but from my own experience, I can say that sewing Softshell can be easy if you know a few practical tips.

Here are three tips to help you sew Softshell fabric successfully.

1. Use a suitable sewing machine needle. To make sewing easier, use Microtex sewing machine needles or a sharp, fine universal needle suited to the specific fabric.

   Microtex needles have a sharp point that helps them pierce dense material precisely. Choose the right needle size and test it on a fabric scrap before sewing. The fewer unnecessary needle punctures, the better the fabric will retain its water resistance.

   

2. Use fabric clips. It's best not to pierce Softshell fabric unnecessarily with pins, as the holes can affect the material's water resistance.

   When cutting the fabric, use weights to hold the pieces in place. While sewing, you can secure the pieces with special fabric clips. In some cases, you can also use suitable tape or temporary fabric glue.

   

3. Choose a suitable sewing machine presser foot. If the Softshell fabric doesn't glide smoothly under the presser foot or feed evenly during sewing, try a Teflon or plastic presser foot.

   A walking foot can also help feed the fabric more evenly.

   The best way to find out whether you need a special presser foot is to test it on the fabric itself. For example, my Bernette Sew&Go 8 sewing machine handles Softshell without any problems, even with a standard presser foot.

   

What can you make with Softshell fabric?

Softshell fabric is suitable for a variety of practical sewing projects where protection from wind and moisture and everyday comfort are important.

I've sewn Softshell trousers for my boys, and I'm very happy with them because they've lasted for several years.

These trousers are especially suitable for cool autumn days and early spring. Softshell fabric helps protect against wind and moisture while keeping children comfortable as they play actively.

Keep in mind that prolonged or heavy rain calls for fabric with suitable waterproofing and properly sealed seams.
