Known as "Softshell" fabric, it is a modern and versatile material that is becoming increasingly popular in Latvia due to its practicality. It offers good protection against wind and moisture while maintaining the breathability of the material.
What is Softshell?
Softshell is a special material that usually consists of two or three layers. The outer layer is often made of durable and waterproof material that protects against rain and wind. The middle layer is usually windproof and helps retain body heat, while the inner layer offers warmth and comfort. It can be thin knit or fleece. Our range includes fleece insulation.
In short, Softshell is a membrane material made up of several layers to create this fantastic material.
How to sew Softshell material?
I won't call myself an expert, but from my experience, I can say that sewing with Softshell can be easy if you know a few tricks.
Here are some tips:
1. Use the right needle: To make sewing easier, use Microtex needles or sharp, fine universal needle. Microtex needles pass through the material more easily and leave a smaller hole, allowing the fabric to maintain better resistance to moisture.
2. Use clips: It is not good to pierce the fabric unnecessarily, so I recommend using weights when drawing on the fabric. When fixing the details, use special fabric clips or for individual pieces, adhesive tape or some temporary glue.
3. Special foot or feed dog: If you feel that the fabric is not moving forward while sewing and is "sticking", you can replace the foot with a Teflon or plastic foot. An upper feed dog can also help.
Do you need a special foot? You will only understand after sewing, for example, my Bernette Sew& Go 8 handles it without any problems.
What can be sewn from Softshell fabric?
Softshell fabric is perfect for various projects that require weather resistance.
1. Outerwear: Softshell fabric is perfect for sewing jackets, coats, and rain pants, providing protection against wind and moisture.
My favorite Softshell coat:
2. Bags:
Practical and easy to maintain.
3. Gloves and stroller gloves: Softshell fabric can be used to sew gloves and hand protectors that will protect hands from wind and rain while pushing strollers.
4. Rain pants: I have rain pants made of Softshell for my boys and I am thrilled, as they last for several years. Perfect for cool autumns and early springs. Various clothing items for children can be sewn from Softshell fabric, such as jackets or gloves.
I hope to provide encouragement not to be afraid of Softshell and to continue working creatively and creating wonderful and valuable projects that will bring joy to yourself, clients, and loved ones!
