Jute fabric – a natural material with wide creative possibilities
Kas ir džutas audums?
Džutas audums ir dabīgas izcelsmes tekstilmateriāls, ko iegūst no džutas auga šķiedrām. Džuta (angliski zināma arī kāburlapvaihessian) comes from the bark of tropical plants (genus Corchorus), mainly cultivated in India and Bangladesh. These coarse, goldenbrownfibers are spun into yarn and woven into a tight fabric with a distinctly coarse texture. Thanks to its natural origin, jute fabric is100% biodegradableandenvironmentally friendly, but we will tell you more about that later. Historically, jute fabric was often used for sewing bags, which is why it is often also called “maisu audumu”.
Why choose jute?
-
Natural and environmentally friendly:Jute fibers are plant-based, requiring relatively little water and pesticides for cultivation, and the material is completely biodegradable. This places jute among the most environmentally friendly textile materials. Interestingly, jute plants can absorb carbon dioxide several times more intensively than trees during their growth, making jute fabric a sustainable choice for anyone who cares about nature.
-
Durable and long-lasting:Jute fabric stands out for its high durability. It can bear heavy loads and last for many years because the natural polymer lignin present in jute fibers gives the fabric special resistance to sunlight and moisture.. Even with intensive use (for example, in bags or rugs), high-quality jute fabric remains intact for a long time.
-
Breathable and safe:The coarse weave and natural fibers ensure that the jute fabricgood breath(is breathable). This means that products made from jute do not retain moisture and are also suitable for food storage – historically, canvas bags were used to store grains, potatoes, coffee beans, etc., because jute protects the contents from spoilage. Also in everyday items, jute products do not gray or become static, which makes them practical.
-
Available and economical:Comparing to other natural textile materials (for example, linen or cotton), jute isquite cheap fabricIts low cost combined with durability is the reason why jute is widely used in cases where an economical yet durable solution is needed. By choosing jute, you can save without sacrificing quality.

Sewing tips for working with jute
Working with jute fabric can differ slightly from sewing finer fabrics, as jute is thick and tends to fray into fibers. Here are some tips, which will help to successfully sew from jute:
- A needle and thread:Choose for the sewing machinestrong needle intended for coarse fabrics, for example, Nm 90/14 or 100/16 size needles that can pierce through thick fibers. Also useddurable thread– preferably synthetic (polyester) thread that will not break under load. If you want a particularly rustic finish, you can also use thicker decorative (e.g., upholstery) thread for sewing, but make sure it matches the chosen needle size.
- Edge treatment against fraying:Jute fabric tends toirt, so the cut edges definitely need to be treated. An effective method is the edgesoverlocking with a zigzag stitchvai apstrāde ar overloku – tas nostiprinās šķiedras un neļaus audumam drupt tālāk. Ja overloka nav, var izmantot arī vienkāršu metodi: ieloki malu divreiz uz iekšu (veidojot dubultu malu) un nošuj – šādi raupjā mala būs paslēpta un neiziris.Papildu drošībai varreinforce the cut edges with a special anti-fray agentor fabric glue, applying it in a thin layer along the very edge. Allow the glue to dry before sewing so it does not interfere with the needle.
- Sewing technique:Working with jute, sew slower and more carefullythan with thin fabric. The coarse weave tends to slip, so it is recommended to use for fastening partsclips(for example, these) instead of pins – clips will hold the fabric better and won’t get lost between the fibers. When sewing, try todo not rushto ensure the stitch is even and to prevent fabric puckering.Seam allowance(seam allowance) leave slightly larger than usual – about 1–1.5 cm – because jute fabric is thick and loosely woven, and a larger seam allowance will ensure a stronger seam.
- Fabric preparation:Before starting sewing, prepared jute fabric. Jute tends to have a specific factory aroma and may contain dust from the manufacturing process. Charlotte Fabricsrecommend washing or thoroughly airing the fabric before use.Wash jute on a gentle cycle (recommended up to 30°C) anddry by spreading out, not in the dryer – this will soften the fibers and reduce the amount of dust. If you do not want to wash, at leastshake and air outIn the fabric field, to get rid of excess lint. Prepared fabric will be more pleasant to work with and will produce less lint. (Note: after sewing, it is also recommended to clean the sewing machine and work surface, as jute can leave a lot of fine fibers.)
Following these tips, working with jute will be much easier, and the final result – higher quality. Soon you will notice that even the seemingly unyielding "burlap fabric" can become a grateful material for beautiful handicrafts!
