Velvet is an elegant, soft, and slightly challenging fabric, but with the right approach, it can become a fantastic material for various creative projects. Here are some useful tips to help you sew with velvet and achieve excellent results.
1. Choose a suitable project
Velvet is versatile – it can be used to sew clothing, interior accessories, or accessories such as bags and cushions. However, it is important to consider that velvet is a thicker and heavier fabric, so avoid projects with many details or complicated seams if you are sewing with velvet for the first time.
2. Prepare the fabric
Like other cotton fabrics, velvet can shrink after washing. To avoid unpleasant surprises, wash the fabric at a low temperature before cutting and allow it to dry naturally.
3. The direction of the fluff – it is important!
Velvet has a fluffy surface that creates a play of light. Always check the direction of the pile before cutting, and make sure all pieces are cut in the same direction. Checking the direction of the pile is simple – run your hand over the fabric surface, and if it feels smooth, it is "with the grain," if rough – "against the grain."
4. Choose suitable equipment
The thickness and texture of velvet can pose challenges. Use:
• Sewing machine needle: Universal or denim needles (80/12 or 90/14).
• Quotation: Teflon or upper conveyor foot to prevent the fabric from slipping.
• Clips: Use clips instead of pins, as pins can damage the fluffy surface.
5. Cutting
Velvet is slippery, so cutting can be challenging. Use a cutting mat and rotary cutter for precise lines. If using scissors, make sure they are sharp to avoid uneven edges.
6. Strengthen the seams
Velvet tends to fray, so it is recommended to reinforce the seams with an overlock or zigzag stitch. This will not only protect the edges of the seams but also give them an aesthetic appearance.
7. Stitch tests
Before you start sewing, always test the stitch tension and stitch length on fabric scraps. For velvet, the usual suitable stitch length is 2.5–3 mm.
8. Ironing without damage
Velvet should not be ironed directly on the fluffy surface, as it can create imprints. Iron from the left side or place a towel or soft cloth between the fabric and the iron. If impressions occur, the fluff can be restored by gently steaming and arranging it with a brush or toothbrush.
9. Sewing at a slow pace
Velvets can slip, so sew slowly and make sure the fabric is firmly secured.
10. Additional seam reinforcement
Velvet is a relatively thick fabric, so at the seams that will have a greater load (pockets, side seams), it is recommended to reinforce the seams with additional stitches.
Creative inspiration
Velvet adds luxury and texture to any project – skirts, pants, coats, cushions, or even small accessories. By following these tips, you can easily work with this exquisite fabric and create stunning products.
