How to sew Softshell gloves?

How to sew Softshell gloves

In this article, I will explain step by step how to sew gloves from Softshell fabric – a durable and windproof material – using my available digital pattern, which you can purchase. here.

What fabric to use?

These gloves are designed not only for Softshell fabric but also for wool, fleece, or thick knitwear. The main thing is that the fabric stretches a little, which makes it comfortable for the hands, providing freedom of movement.

For the cuff part, I recommend using cuff fabric, which is flexible and returns well to its original shape. It ensures that the cuffs fit snugly around the wrist joint and prevents cold air from getting inside.

Should the fabric be washed beforehand?

If the fabric has natural fibers, such as cotton, I recommend washing it before cutting and sewing.

What sizes are available in the pattern?

My glove pattern is available in various sizes – from small children's sizes to large adult sizes. To choose the right size, measure the circumference of the wrist around the joint and the length from the wrist to the tip of the longest finger.

  • Children S-(wrist circumference-14 cm, wrist length-12 cm)
  • Children M-(wrist circumference-16 cm, wrist length-13 cm)
  • Adult S-(wrist circumference-19 cm, wrist length-18 cm)
  • Adult M-(wrist circumference 20 cm-, wrist length- 20 cm)
  • Adult L-(wrist circumference 20 cm-, wrist length- 22 cm)

Steps for sewing gloves

Print the pattern

Redraw and cut out the parts

Cut out the pattern pieces. You will need two front pieces, two back pieces, and two cuffs. Make sure the pieces are cut so that the fabric stretch direction is horizontal, allowing the gloves to be flexible and comfortable.

Sew the top and bottom parts together

Fold the upper and lower parts of the glove together with the right sides facing each other. Secure the edges and the thumb curve with pins (not recommended for Softshell) or clips. Sew with a zigzag stitch or overlock, if available. This will ensure the seams' flexibility.

    Cut off the excess material.

Reduce the amount of seams around the thumb to avoid creating unnecessary thickness. I personally like to leave as little as possible.

Sew the front and back pieces together

Now assemble the front and back glove pieces with the right sides together. Align the top curve, edges, and bottom edge. The thumb seam should be directed upwards against the glove's curve. Sew around, leaving the bottom open.

Cut the gloves to the right side

Cut the gloves to the right side, pushing out the thumb and curves. Now the gloves will start to take shape.

    Prepare the cuffs

Fold each cuff in half with the right sides together and align the side seams. Sew the side seam with a zigzag or overlock stitch, then fold the cuff in half again so that the wrong sides are together, creating a cuff tube.

    Add cuffs

Insert the cuff inside the glove.

You will have three layers: the cuff and glove layers. Slightly stretch the cuff to fit the glove opening, and secure it with pins. Sew around with a zigzag stitch or overlock, securing all layers together.

    Finish line
Cut the gloves to the right side and – ready! :)

    For excellent results, iron.

Now you have a pair of Softshell gloves that will perfectly protect your hands from the wind and cold.

Purchase a pattern and start sewing!

If you haven't purchased the pattern yet, you can do so here and start creating mittens for yourself or your family.

I would be very happy to see - share photos of the mittens on social media to inspire others using the hashtag #CharlotteFabrics.
